A new priest and five new deacons for the Franciscan community of the Holy Land

A new priest and five new deacons for the Franciscan community of the Holy Land

JERUSALEM – Tuesday, June 29, 2016 – In St. Saviour Church, Archbishop Fouad Twal, Latin Patriarch, ordained one priest and five deacons to Holy Orders, for the Custody of the Holy Land.

On the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, in the Church of the Monastery of St. Saviour, Brothers Eliazar Arteaga Chavero, Gilberto Hernández Hernández, Jesús Luis Rodriguez Neri, Marko Gulin and Rodrigo Machado Soares received the ministry of the diaconate while Brother Rodolfo Ramirez de la Torre was ordained priest by the imposition of hands of the Latin Patriarch.
Archbishop Fouad Twal, presided over the celebration, in the presence of Fr Francesco Patton, Custos of the Holy Land, and the Franciscan community gathered around the ordinands. “I take this opportunity – said the Latin Patriarch – to express my joy to have with us the new Custos, Father Francesco Patton, and I extend to him our best wishes for this new and challenging mission. “

“Your dedication here in the Holy Land, is a priceless gift”

In his homily, Archbishop Twal has developed various features of the Franciscan life, obedience to the bishop and the superior of the community, respect the vow of poverty; “as the vow of poverty, you know it is not a matter of despising or rejecting material goods but of a loving and responsible use of these goods and at the same time an ability to renounce them with great interior freedom – that is, with reference to God and his plan.(Pastores dabo vobis, 30). The joyful acceptance of these evangelical counsels exalt your radical and prophetic gift, especially for this generation seeking witnesses more than teachers. (…) The monk, as a consecrated, is a man chosen by God, who belongs to Him completely. He does not accomplish great things, but lives in union with Christ, and His great adventure. Today, we must remember with gratitude your friends, benefactors and teachers, who prepared you for this important moment. Do not forget our former Custos, Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, a father, and a friend who left us briefly, only to return to us closer and more committed than ever.”
The Patriarch encouraged the ordinands to remember every moment and particularity of their vocation in the Holy Land: “Your consecration here in the Holy Land is a privilege and a priceless gift. Keep it and always revive it, by listening to the Word of God, prayer, the sacraments and study.”
At the end of the ceremony, the brothers, the families and the faithful gathered to congratulate the new deacons, and receive the first blessing of Father Rodolfo.
