Visit of the Italian Minister of Environment to the Patriarchate
JERUSALEM – The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Fouad Twal, welcomed on Tuesday February 23, 2016, the Italian Minister of Environment, Protection of Land and Sea, Mr. Gian Luca Galletti.
The Italian Minister was accompanied by the Italian Consul General in Jerusalem, Mr. Davide La Cecilia, as well as a delegation of ten people.
The Patriarch, the Minister and the Consul discussed matters of the Holy Land and the suspension of peace negotiations. The Patriarch expressed his concern regarding the new wave of violence which prevails in the country, stressing on the importance to speak courageously in favor of the truth, so that peace would be restored to the two peoples, Israeli & Palestinian.
Mr. Gian Luca Galletti discussed with the Patriarch environmental matters, relating namely to the issues of global warming and lack of water, as well as their moral and political long-term consequences on the global level. The environment constitutes a favorable terrain to the planet cooperation and to peace in the world, said the Minister. His Beatitude referred to the initiatives of the Patriarchate in favor of environment, namely the installation of solar energy system in schools and parishes, also in Gaza.
The Minister of Environment expressed the wish of his country to cooperate in projects of environmental development of Patriarchate-related schools and infrastructures, and to participate in initiatives to welcome refugees. The diocese hosts thousands of refugees, namely in Jordan, in schools and parishes run by the Latin Patriarchate, as well as at the Center of Our Lady of Peace in Amman.
