Patriarch Twal meets with Palestinian Prime Minister
RAMALLAH – On Thursday, February 4, 2016, Patriarch Fouad Twal met with Palestinian Prime Minister Dr. Rami Hamdallah in Ramallah, in the presence of Bishop William Shomali and Father Imad Twal.
During their meeting, the Prime Minister and the Patriarch addressed many issues relating to cooperation between the Church and the Palestinian government in the development of the various sectors of Palestinian society. They also stressed the role of Christian schools in the field of education in Palestine – a high percentage of current university graduates from Christian schools, a sign of the quality of education provided in these schools.
Patriarch Twal and Dr. Hamdallah also discussed housing projects in Jerusalem and the development of the tourism sector. Over the past five months and because of the tensions that have shaken the Holy Land, there has been a significant decline in the number of pilgrims and tourists especially during Christmas. In Bethlehem, tourism is one of the primary source of income for many families.
Bishop William Shomali, Patriarchal Vicar for Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories, and the General Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate, Father Imad Twal were also present at the meeting.
The Prime Minister stated that “Palestine is an example of tolerance and coexistence among members of the different religions.”
