Coptic Pope in Jerusalem for Anba Abraham’s funeral
Statement – His Holiness, Tawadros II, Pope of the Coptic Church in Egypt, arrived in Jerusalem on Thursday November 26, 2015 with a delegation of bishops for the funeral of H.E. Anba Abraham, the Coptic Orthodox Metropolitan Archbishop of Jerusalem and the Near East, who passed away last night. The funeral will be held on Saturday November 28, 2015.
The delegation comprised of H. E. Metropolitan Bishoy, Metropolitan of Damietta and Kafr El-Sheik; H. E. Metropolitan Sarabamon, Metropolitan and Abbot of St. Bishoy Monastery, Wady ElNatroun; H. G. Bishop Yostos, Bishop and Abbot of St Anthony’s Monastery, Red Sea; H. G. Bishop Kyrollos Aba Mina, Bishop and Abbot of St. Mina Monastery, Mariout; H. G. Bishop Theodothios, General Bishop of Giza.
The delegation also included Fr. Angelos Ishaq, Pope’s Secretary, and Mr. Guirges Saleh, General Secretary of the Middle East Council of Churches.
H.E. Anba Abraham passed away after a long battle with illness. He was ordained Archbishop of Jerusalem on November 17, 1991.
According to tradition in the Coptic Church, the Archbishop of Jerusalem is the oldest among other archbishops regardless of status or hierarchy. He is regarded as the second most central figure after the Coptic Pope.
This the first time in thirty five years that the Coptic Pope visited Jerusalem.
