Mass in Bethlehem in remembrance of victims of terrorism
Bethlehem – On Sunday November 22, 2015, a mass took place in St. Catherine Church in Bethlehem in remembrance of victims who had fallen as a result of terrorist attacks in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, France, Russia, Mali and other countries. The mass was organized at the request of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas by the municipality of Bethlehem, the Higher Committee for Churches’ Affairs in Palestine and the Latin Parish in Bethlehem.
The mass was presided over by Bishop William Shomali, the Patriarchal Vicar of Jerusalem, with the participation of Fr. Nerwan Banna, the parish priest of Bethlehem. Moreover, the mass was attended by Mr. Jibrin Al-Bakri, Governor of Bethlehem; Mrs. Vera Baboun, the Mayor of Bethlehem; Mr. Alexander Rudakov, Russian Ambassador for Palestine, the French Vice consul and other diplomats.
In his homily, Bishop Shomali talked about the agonizing events that happened in the last few weeks in Jerusalem and other Palestinian regions, in Beirut, Paris, Sinai and Mali. He said that “there is who had stabbed and the one who was accused of stabbing; there is who took a gun and ended another person’s life. There is who took hostages and detonated a plane. The end result to all of that is catastrophic”. He added “we have lost our humanity and our spiritual values. The absence of Mercy is the reason why we are living around and subjected to violence, terrorism, house demolitions and revenge.”
