St Joseph French Hospital opens its maternity department

St Joseph French Hospital opens its maternity department

JERUSALEM – His Beatitude Fouad Twal,  Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem,  presided at the inauguration ceremony of the maternity section at Saint Joseph French Hospital in Jerusalem on May 27, 2015.

In his speech the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem called on those who work at this Maternity unit “to protect  and respect life”, “because this new section of the hospital  must be a place of deep human and spiritual experience. It must be a new crèche inhabited by feelings of peace, joy and gratitude to God, and not a place which fosters the culture of death and selfishness.”

This event was attended by several personalities including Mr. Saeb Erekat, representative of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, the Superior General of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition, Mr. Jamil Coussa, Director-General of Saint Joseph Hospital, and other public figures. “It is very important, continued the Patriarch, that we look beyond medical care or techniques of childbirth in a maternity hospital, because these places witness the bringing forth of life,  the grandeur and the beauty of creation, completed with much care by the One who stands for love, our Almighty and God most high.”

“They are the places where rises the first cry of life of a human being who for nine months was formed in the image of God in the mother’s womb.   In motherhood, parents contemplate the fruit of their love and fidelity which brings forth life.   They are also places where humanity should see its future, that is hope. “The sign of hope is a fragile new born baby needing so much  protection and care from those who surround him”, added the Patriarch.

Speaking about the project, His Beatitude added : “Back in 2004, the Administrative Board started to study  the importance, of this project, taking into consideration the extensive needs in East Jerusalem.  The number of deliveries continued to increase and existing maternity hospitals in the city are no longer sufficient.  This project will also provide a number of jobs, which will help 150 families of Jerusalem with employment opportunities and to remain in their city and their land.”

The Patriarch concluded by thanking all those who contributed to the realization of this project, especially King Abdullah of Jordan, Prince of Qatar,  the United Arab Emirates,  the Sultanate of Oman, the Islamic Development Bank, Oeuvre d’Orient – Paris,  Secours Catholique-Paris,  Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, as well as many other benefactors and local donors”.

It is worth remembering that the hospital belongs to the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition, the first Catholic congregation for women to come and work in the Holy Land in the 19th century.   From the outset, their mission was in the area of education, education and charity in general. The new maternity wing has  75 beds, which is a real support for the city and its suburbs.
