Patriarch Twal invites Palestinian president to attend canonization Mass, May 17

RAMALLAH- Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Fouad Twal has invited Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to attend the Mass which will be celebrated at the Vatican on May 17 during which Blessed Mary Alphonsine Ghattas and Blessed Mary of Jesus Crucified Baouardy will be canonized saints.

During his visit to the presidential headquarters in Ramallah in the company of a Latin Patriarchal delegation on Sunday March 22, Patriarch Twal noted that preparations are in full swing to celebrate the canonization of the two nuns, stressing that it is a historic and qualitative event at the religious, ecclesiastical and national levels.

President Abbas thanked Patriarch Twal on this official invitation, stressing the sanctity of the Holy Land and the role played by the local Church in serving the society in various fields including building schools and hospitals. He also underlined the leading role played by the Church in maintaining the social fabric, spreading the message of love, and working for justice and peace.

It is to be noted that Mariam Bawardi (1846-1878) was born in the village of Ibillin, Galilee. She is the founder of the Carmel of Bethlehem. During her life, she received the grace of the stigmata. A mystic, she also had many dreams in which she received communications from Jesus. Furthermore, Marie Alphonsine Danil Ghattas (1843-1927), in turn, was born in Jerusalem. She is co-founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Rosary dedicated to pastoral work and, later, to help the elderly and young children, to serve the poor, but also to fight against moral poverty.
