After Jordan, Archbishop Lingua appointed Nuncio in Cuba
VATICAN – Archbishop Giorgio Lingua was appointed by the Holy Father Apostolic Nuncio in Cuba. He served for five years as Apostolic Nuncio for Jordan and Iraq. His successor has not been announced.
Archbishop Lingua was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Iraq and Jordan in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. Over five years, the situation in the region, and in the countries where he represented the Vatican, has changed considerably – withdrawal of coalition troops sent for Iraq’s invasion, subsequently leaving the country in a total civil strife, uprising of Daesh, influx of refugees in Jordan, etc. In this framework, he intervened more than once to denounce the seizure by terrorists of more and more sophisticated arms . “Somebody must have supplied this huge fire power”, he said on Radio Vatican. “This traffic of weapons should be stopped, followed by disarming the jihadists without hesitation and identifying the suppliers”.
Concerned as well about the fate of many refugees who fled from Iraq under the threat of the Islamists, he sent numerous appeals to the international community to support these people who have abandoned everything, and to give them the hope of a return to their homes. “Let us hope therefore that peace will come back. And here, it is the international community that is urged to act”, he said to AED.
Archbishop Lingua shared in in the preparations for the trip of Pope Francis to Jordan in May 2014.
His appointment in Cuba comes a few weeks after the historical thawing of American-Cuban relations in the wake of 50 years of diplomatic severance. This reconciliation was made possible, thanks to some intervention by the Vatican. A heavy task is therefore awaits Archbishop Lingua, who knows a bit about the region after having worked in the United States. He succeeds Archbishop Bruno Musaro, who was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Egypt and Delegate of the Holy See to the Arab League.
The Latin Patriarchate, clergy and faithful, thanks Archbishop Lingua for the good work he has undertaken in Iraq and Jordan, on behalf of the Holy Father. All best wishes for a successful mission in Cuba!
