On Establishing the Commission for the
AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF MADABA-JORDAN
The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Fouad Twal gladly accepted the initiative of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, that established an ad hoc Commission, in order to assure the optimum development of the American University of Madaba-Jordan and its full contribution to society in the coming years.
The Commission will have full autonomy to accomplish its tasks and in respect of the Jordanian laws. It will work in full collaboration with the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the promoter of the project and owner of the university, and will be reporting directly to the Secretary of State.
Professor Agostino Borromeo, Governor General of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, has been invited to form this Commission and to coordinate its work. The Commission formally received its mandate from the Secretary of State, started its work in November 2014, and visited Jordan on December 16-19, 2014.
The Commission has identified its work in these three main areas:
- the financial stability, viability and probity of the University,
- the governance and administrative structures of the University,
- the academic planning of the University.
To accomplish these, the Commission created a local Committee of Administration, presided by Archbishop Giorgio Lingua, Apostolic Nuncio to Jordan, to monitor and coordinate the work of the University until July 2015, in which time, a permanent set of arrangements will be in place. Further planning will also be taking place to ensure the academic development of the University.
