Latin parish of St George – Irbid, Jordan

The parish of St George the Martyr is located in Northern Jordan, in the Governorate of Irbid, which includes a population of 1 million inhabitants. It lies at a distance of 70 kms North of Amman, the capital, and 25 kms from the borders with Syria.

The Latin parish has about 150 families. A significant number that requires more infrastructure to support the healthy development of activities for everyone. There are several youth groups that include altar servers, a branch of Caritas, and a school run by the Sisters of the Rosary. Larger rooms are required for the parish committee as well as for larger gatherings that bring together the entire community.

At present the parish includes some 175 families scattered over the area of irbid. The Parish is being served by the Sisters of Rosary. Moreover there are several church movements and parish activities related to different groups : Parish Council – Caritas Committee – Young Christian Students – Young Christian Workers – Legion of Mary – Our Family Committee – Servants of the Altar Team – Choir group – liturgical committee. Each movement has its own spirituality, its own action, with the aim of serving e members of the community and the citizens, each according to its potential.  Special attention is given to university students, throughout the district, who live on a temporary basis within the parish for the duration of their studies, in an attempt to help them to remain in touch with Mother Church, so that their living far away from the city will not be an obstacle in front of their spiritual life.
