At the Salesian Sisters the New Evangelization in progress
JERUSALEM – On the afternoon of Sunday, April 29, Patriarch Fouad Twal visited the community of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in Jerusalem. An opportunity, on the part of the Patriarch, to encourage the “Jerusalem Project”, the idea of a biblical retreat that contributes to the New Evangelization.
At 17:00, the sisters of the community of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians welcomed with joy the Patriarch in their home in Jerusalem. Archbishop Twal greeted the sisters with a lot of confidence, “as a good shepherd,” says Sister Lina, one of the seven sisters of the Jerusalem house. The community of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, of the Salesians family is present in the Holy Land in Nazareth, Bethlehem and Jerusalem. In his remarks, Archbishop Twal also thanked the Congregation for their presence and for “the beauty of their Jerusalem Project“. The “Jerusalem Project” was born “of a intuition of Mother Antonia, our Mother Superior, on the occasion of the General Chapter of 2002” explains Sister Dolce who has witnessed the different stages of the project.
The idea? To experience a time of spiritual reconstitution in the very place of Salvation, learning from Jesus by coming closer to the Holy Scriptures, in harmony with Salesian charism. “Since 2006 every year two sessions are organized,” says Sister Dolce: “one of 45 days, and the other three months”. These internships collect the Salesian sisters from around the world. “At this moment we have 21 participants from China, Thailand, Chile, Brazil, Africa, East Timor…” . The opinion of the participants is that these great moments of reconstitution have a direct impact on the quality of prayer, on community relationships, on mission, and which also respond to a desire for renewal of the Church. The Patriarch did not fail to underline how: “going back to the source, trying ever more fully to understand the Word of God (…) Your Jerusalem Project participates in the New Evangelization“.
In the next few years the “Jerusalem Project” should also be enlarged, at the request of many, such as Sister Dolce states: “from 2014, if the general chapter confirms it, we will open up our sessions to the religious of other congregations as well as the lay people involved in the formation of youth” .
The New Evangelization is well underway …
