Montevarchi: a blessed portion of the Holy Land
Montevarchi, a small town in the province of Arezzo in the Diocese of Fiesole, holds a strong attachment to the land of Jesus – a little corner of the blessed Holy Land for several reasons. This was a wonderful discovery for Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo, Patriarchal Vicar for Israel during his visit with Don Mario Corniole.
On Saturday October 16th, Bishop Marcuzzo upon the invitation of Mayor, Giorgio Valentini, opened the traveling exhibition “A muro non basta”. It was held in a beautiful old church and is the result of the outstanding work of Andrea Merli , an artist and a former professor at Bethlehem University.
The exhibition was organized by the municipality, and the association “Habibti Betlemme, which includes photos, documents and testimonies about the separation wall built in the Holy Land. We are aware that Montevarchi has already established a sister city relationship with Bethlehem and other cities in Israel. The exhibition has toured Italy, having attracted interest and inspired thoughts on the Holy Land.
In the evening, Bishop Marcuzzo, at the invitation of a priest, Don Roberto Brandi, celebrated a Pontifical Mass in the parish of St. Andrew Corsini. The Bishop also blessed and inaugurated a beautiful shrine of the Blessed Palestinian Carmelite, Sr. Maryam Bawardi, Mary of Jesus Crucified. The shrine is the work of local artist Donato Cocca, while the icon was made by Sr.Elisa Galardi, Augustinian Sisters of the Annunciation.
The faithful were full of joy during the blessing of the shrine, and as the bishop presented briefly his life and spirituality.
In the evening, Bishop Marcuzzo led a conference on “The situation of justice and peace in the Holy Land and the Synod of Bishops” attended by the parishioners and people of the town. The audience expressed interest and concern for the present situation in the Holy Land.
Montevarchi is the home of the Blessed Sr. Maria Teresa Scrilla, the foundress of the Sisters of the Institute of Our Lady of Mount Caramel, whose sisters are in the parish of Ramleh.
Montevarchi, is not far from San Sepolcro, another city deeply committed to the Holy Land through the laudable efforts of Don Mario, a central proponent of initiatives for the Holy Land. Indeed Montevarchi deserves to be designated ” a corner of the blessed land of Jesus.”
