Inauguration of a new spirituality center: “Io sono la luce del mondo”
“Io sono la luce del mondo” (“I am the light of the world”), is a new Center of the Capuchin Friars. Inauguration of the Center took place in Jerusalem on Tuesday, September 28, 2010. Present during the opening ceremony were His Excellency Archbishop Antonio Franco, Apostolic Nuncio; His Beatitude Archbishop Fouad Twal, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem; Patriarch Emeritus Michel Sabbah; the Most Reverend Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Custos of the Holy Land; the Very Reverend Mauro Jöhri, Minister General of the Capuchins; the Most Reverend Francis Beschi, Bishop of Bergamo, and many other guests.
In the 1930’s, the Capuchin Friars upon the invitation of then Patriarch Archbishop Luigi Barlassina decided to build a convent in the Jewish area of Jerusalem. It was planned to be a hospice for Brothers who visit the Holy City and for young men in Formation and Biblical studies. The project did not materialize because the Capuchin Friars had to leave Jerusalem during the Second World War. Part of the property was later used by the State for a psychiatric hospital.
The old project plan was revived in the 1990’s and later completed through significant collaboration with an architect from Bergamo for the renovation of the building. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Capuchin Friars and support from countless benefactors, the new Center has been completed
“I am the Light of the World” is now open. as a Center of Spirituality. It is not a pilgrimage center but a place for Capuchin Friars studying in Biblical Institutes or other courses in Jerusalem; and for groups and individuals entering into a journey of spiritual formation. “I am the Light of the World” offers a spiritual refreshment for individuals who wish to attend seminars and specialist training courses intended for priests and religious, catechists, and pastoral workers.
Ten olive trees were planted in a garden to acknowledge and remember with gratitude all who have worked with dedication, commitment and passion to the creation of the Centre.
